Philip (Phil) Smith

Phil Smith, Graduate Student

Phil Smith is a first semester student in the M.S. Reliability Engineering program. He graduated from UMD in 2014 with a B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering. After graduation, Phil went to work for the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission where he held various roles in in the Fire & External Hazards Analysis Branch, Nuclear Security and Incident Response, and in the Division of Reactor Projects. Phil currently works for The Boeing Company as a Senior Fire Protection Engineer in Enterprise Security & Fire Protection. His focus is on protection of the manufacturing facilities and critical production equipment from fire and natural hazards risks. Phil has an interest in incident investigation and works to maximize business resilience through engineering analysis of failure modes. Phil recently completed an MBA from Johns Hopkins University’s Carey Business School where he focused on Financial Business and Leading Organizations. He is interested in studying Reliability Engineering to broaden his technical skills beyond fire risk to formal analysis of data and the study of system / equipment failure. Outside of work and school, Phil volunteers as a Firefighter, EMT, and Hazmat Technician.
