Stephen Thomas

Stephen Thomas, Graduate Student

Stephen lives in Pennsylvania and is a Senior System Safety Engineer at Aptiv PLC, responsible for the safety analysis and validation of developmental self-driving cars. Prior to joining Aptiv, he was a system safety engineer at Uber. He spent over 20 years as an automation and functional safety engineer in the petroleum and chemical industries.  From 2014 to 2018, he was an engineering lead for Chevron and was responsible for safety engineering for the $2 billion OASIS functional safety program at five Chevron refineries.  From 2005 to 2014 he was an automation project engineer for ExxonMobil, including leading the global automation projects team responsible for worldwide support of major automation projects across ExxonMobil’s 37 refineries. Stephen holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University and an M.Eng. in Reliability Engineering from the University of Maryland.  He is a licensed professional engineer (Control Systems) in the state of Alabama.  He is a member of several international standards committees, including the IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 Functional Safety committees and the SAE G-48 System Safety committee.
